‘Tis the Season

Holiday Cheer

A few days before Christmas I received an extremely nice e-mail from David DePaolo, of WorkCompCentral fame. He had read my blog post about my local food bank and made his own donation to his local food bank. Thank you David!

Incorrigible Grinch

I have a loud neighbor. They talk on the phone loud, watch TV loud, play music loud, etc. Loud enough so that I can hear whatever it is they’re doing over my own TV with the doors and windows closed. The night before Christmas Eve at around 8 O’clock PM they were playing something that sounded like a marching band – complete with tubas. I couldn’t tell if it was a radio or TV or what – but it was extremely loud. Being a good neighbor and filled with the aforementioned holiday cheer, I went out onto my patio and hollered, “Hey! Turn it down already!” In a few minutes their marching band music died down to a low rumble.

A few minutes later I find out that I had just yelled at a group of teenagers with instruments walking down our street… carrolling. That’s right, I yelled at carolers – I’m the Grinch.

Ho ho ho!

Your Local Food Bank Needs Your Help

Driving home from a deposition on Tuesday evening I was listening to NPR. ((I’m an NPR junkie, remember?)) They had a piece about how food banks in California are struggling. Donations across the board are down. Corporations that used to donate are reducing or even eliminating their donations. People who once donated to food banks are now showing up asking for food.

Tuesday night I made a decision to help my local food bank.

I have donated all of the income from this website, retroactive to November 1, 2008 to my local food bank. I will be sending out an e-mail to all current paid subscribers thanking them for their support of this website and, by extension, our food banks.

I also decided to make a further commitment.

I will continue to work on this site to bring you the absolute best workers’ compensation calculators for free. And, I will continue to donate every single cent from this website to this food bank through the end of this year.
If you buy a monthly subscription, I will donate your subscription to this food bank through the end of the year. If you buy a yearly subscription between now and the end of the year, I’ll donate the whole thing to them. I do not believe this would be tax deductible for you, so I’ve thought of another option.
If you make a donate of any amount to your local food bank, just send me a copy of the receipt and I will give you an equivalent amount of subscription access to this website. ((E-mail, fax, mail – whatever works for you.))

Calculator Issues

Calculator Performance Issue: It has come to my attention that some users are having problems with the “Body Part” code finder. This problem apparently occurs when you click on the “Body Part” button and just see a spinning blue “waiting” disc instead of a list of body parts.

Temporary Fix: Even though the Body Part code search function does not work for some users, the rating functions still appears to work just fine. If you know the Body Part code, you should be able to enter it manually in the box provided. If you are performing a 2005 schedule rating, please use the full 8 digit body part code.

Permanent Solution: I am working on a fix for this problem and will update this website as soon as I am able. I cannot be sure, but I suspect that the problem is being caused, in part, by the recent increase in the popularity of this website. ((Yay, popularity! Boo, problems!))

To all paid-subscription users:

I value your business and appreciate your patience. If this problem persists, I will create a second website exclusively for your use.

PDRater.com Facelift

First off, don’t be afraid, this is the same website you’ve come to know and love. Change can be good! Besides, this latest change is almost 100% cosmetic.

I have been meaning to change the entire look of PDRater.com for a while now. Thus far I’ve been focusing on improving the workers’ compensation calculators and the website content.

Previously I showed the evolution of PDRater.com from a ridiculously ugly but useful website into a less ugly and more useful website. Since these latest changes have been mostly cosmetic rather than functional, this should really be something like Version 4.647. I figure with adding six new calculators in September and updating the look, I’ve earned the right to call this Version 5.0.

Besides, its my blog, right?

The last theme I used was based upon the fantastic WordPress Themer Kit, which is an incredible tool for people who either have little graphic design skill or who don’t want to build a new theme from scratch. Ultimately, I just don’t have the skill, time, or inclination to build an aesthetically pleasing theme. (But, let’s be real, its mostly the lack of skill thing).

That said, I am good at adjusting and incorporating. The original Aeros theme looked significantly different than the one you see. I’ve changed the background color, removed the slight transparency, highlighted the different sidebar sections, and moved the top menu to the left side. Since the theme was open source, this mostly involved tinkering with the CSS and underlying PHP.

Another Three New EAMS Calculators!

As you know, last Monday I brought you two new EAMS calculators / search engines which were basically an improved search engine for the EAMS ADJ number lookups and EAMS office lookups.

The IT guy for my law firm wrote an e-mail to me on Friday suggesting:

Hey, how about a body part search function on your website? That might be useful sometime.

First off, thank you for the suggestion TK! Secondly, I was actually in the process of building such a calculator on Sunday September 21, 2008 when my laptop stopped working. My laptop was fixed on Friday (more tomorrow) and I was able to finish the EAMS body part to body part code search function.

With the EAMS Body Part Codes search engine, you can search for the EAMS code associated with a body part of your choice. And, just in case you receive an Application for Adjudication of Claim or some document referencing the EAMS Body Part Code, you can even do a reverse lookup – searching by the EAMS Body Part Code!

I was so happy to get my laptop back I built a whole new EAMS search engine and a better way to access forms. After having a hell of a time trying to locate the proper document type and document title on Friday I decided to make this my next project.

With the EAMS Document Type and Title search engine, you can search for an EAMS Document Title by the document type or document title itself.

With the new EAMS forms on the DWC forms page, you now have a bewilderingly large number of forms to search through in order to find the one you need. Not only do you have to look through the 136 different forms offered by the page, but the EAMS forms are not easily distinguishable from the non-EAMS forms.

What I’ve done is create an EAMS and DWC forms search engine which scans through the DWC’s lists of forms by the form type, form name, and form number, and generates a list of just the forms which fit your search. On my forms search engine, the EAMS forms will be highlighted so you know its an EAMS form at a glance.

And THAT is how I squandered my weekend.
